What To Do After a Vehicle Accident

Knowing what to do after an accident can feel overwhelming. Here are some practical tips to keep in mind so that you’re prepared for the unexpected.

5 Key Things to Remember

Stay calm: Even though accidents are stressful, the most important thing you can do is stay calm. Remind yourself that accidents happen and that help is on the way.

Check for injuries: Are you safe? Are others safe? Check for injuries at the scene before doing anything else. If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately. Listen to the advice of the emergency operator and wait for the response team to arrive.

Gather information: If it is safe to do so, get out of your vehicle and take as many photos and videos of the scene as possible. If other vehicles are involved, collect the following information:

  • Name and contact details

  • Vehicle license plate and registration numbers

  • Insurance information, including company name, phone number, and policy number

Contact a Collision Reporting Centre: If there are no injuries and the total combined damage appears to be less than $5,000, contact a Collision Reporting Centre to complete a police report. If combined damages appear to be more than $5,000, contact the police immediately.

Contact your insurer: Notify your insurer (or broker) as soon as possible to report the incident. You can find more information about the claims process on our Vehicle Claims page.

Common Scenarios

Fender benders

Fender benders are quite common. If you’re involved in a minor accident, you do not need to contact the police if:

  • There are no injuries

  • The total combined damage appears to be under $5,000

Instead, you should:

  • Move your vehicle out of the way (if safe to do so)

  • Take as many photos and videos as possible

  • Exchange contact and registration details with other drivers involved

  • Contact a Collision Reporting Centre

  • Contact your insurer

Injury accidents

Injury-related accidents can be frightening for everyone involved. If you’re in a more serious accident, remain calm, call 911 immediately, and follow the operator’s instructions. Once you’re safe, contact your insurer within 24 hours to report the incident.

Preparing Your Vehicle Ahead of Time

Accidents can’t always be avoided, but you can ensure your vehicle is well-prepared. Here are some useful items to keep in your car just in case:

  • Notepad and pen

  • Copies of the official FSRA Accident Worksheet

  • Reflective, high-visibility vests

  • Bottled water

  • Small tool kit
