Frequently Asked Questions
General Knowledge
-
An insurance broker solicits, sells, and negotiates insurance contracts on behalf of clients. Their role is to survey the market, obtain quotes, and present coverage options for customers to choose from.
Typically, brokers help individuals and businesses find and purchase car, home, business, and farm insurance. In Ontario, brokers are regulated by the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO) and must obtain all required licenses to operate.
-
Insurance brokers work for their customers—whether individuals or businesses. They research the market for coverage options, present those options to their clients, and assist with applying for and securing insurance from the appropriate company. Brokers also shop renewals each year across all the insurers they have access to. In addition, they help assess risks and provide support throughout the claims process.
-
Some reasons to use an insurance broker include:
Insurance brokers help you find companies and policies that suit your needs and budget.
Brokers have access to numerous insurance providers and can offer several different options for coverage and price.
Brokers are licensed, educated professionals who provide the advice you need to make the best choice.
An insurance broker acts as your advocate in the event of a claim.
-
Insurance agents represent a single insurance company and act as sales representatives for that insurer. In contrast, insurance brokers represent you, the client. Brokers have access to multiple companies and can provide a variety of coverage options at different price points to suit your needs. Both agents and brokers are compensated through commissions or fees paid by insurance companies.

Stop and stay calm – failure to remain at the scene of an accident may result in criminal prosecution.
Call 911 or local police if: someone is hurt, you think any other driver may be guilty of impaired driving, you suspect you’re the victim of a staged collision, or there is significant property damage or the vehicle is not drivable.
Always report the auto collision to the police. The Ontario Highway Traffic Act requires that all collisions where persons are injured, or a combined damage valued at more than $5,000 to vehicles or property, or damage to any private, municipal or highway property be reported to police as soon as possible.
If it’s safe, move the vehicles to the side of the road. If vehicles aren’t drivable, turn on hazard lights or surround the vehicles with cones or warning triangles.
Regardless of the circumstances never admit fault, sign any documents regarding fault or promise to pay for damages.
Record all collision details as soon as possible following a collision. An accident report form can help to make sure you capture important details for your claim or police report:
What, how, when and where it happened.
Weather and road conditions.
Names, addresses, licence plate numbers and insurance details of all drivers, passengers and witnesses.
If possible, take photos of any vehicle damage.
Be wary of tow truck operators who pressure you to authorize towing or repairs. You have the right to request estimates of fees in advance.
Keep a copy of an accident report form in your vehicle and use it to document important details you may need for the police or to file an insurance claim.
Contact your insurance broker as soon as possible, ideally within seven days. This prompt notification helps protect your claim and ensures a smooth claims process.
